Traveling is a wonderful way to relax, find new experiences, reduce stress and enjoy some happiness before returning to the daily grind. Fitness routines can be difficult to maintain when you are traveling, whether it’s for work or for that vacation you have been planning for months. When you return home, it may be harder to resume your fitness routine. It’s easier than you might think to stay fit when you are away! Staying fit on the road is easy with these simple tips.
Before you go, make sure to plan your diet and exercise before heading out.
We’ve all done it. We ate at the hotel restaurant more than we ought to have, and those margaritas in the afternoon aren’t going away. While it’s important to enjoy yourself and have fun while on vacation, having a plan for staying healthy and active will help you avoid some of the indulgences. This can help us avoid gaining weight.
Before you travel,
- Plan your exercise! Before you leave, decide how you will exercise, when you will do it, and what equipment you’ll use. With a fitness app such as Future, you can create individualized travel workouts with. Continue reading to learn more!
- Bring healthy snacks and food (jerky, bananas protein bars etc.).
- Online, search for healthy choices in local restaurants and hotels. Check if the menus contain calorie counts.
- Ask the concierge at your hotel or host for local healthy food options.
- You won’t need to go out to eat as much if you have a refrigerator in your room. I always have yogurt and water on hand. Also, you can stop by a local supermarket to get supplies. Some hotels offer this service.
Don’t pressure yourself to get in shape while you’re away
It’s not a good idea to start a new workout routine when you are away, unless you travel for this purpose. It’s best to start a new routine and get back into shape at home. You’ll know what you want to do while you’re on vacation and can adjust your routine based on where you will be staying. You’ll have more energy if you get in shape prior to your trip. For example, you can hike that trail you saw in Pinterest.
The Future app literally changed my fitness lifestyle if you struggle to stay motivated. Before, I could not stay active for the life of me, but now, I feel anxious if I miss more than two days.
Visit the website of your hotel to learn about their fitness facilities
Most modern hotels offer a gym, unless you are staying in a bed and breakfast or vacation rental. Check the website of your hotel before booking to see if they have any fitness equipment or amenities. A hotel with an indoor or outdoor pool can also be a good way to keep fit. If you don’t own one, it can be a real treat.
You may still be able to work out in your hotel if it doesn’t offer a gym.
A recent trip found me in a beautiful renovated hotel without a gym in a large city. As a guest, I was able to use the YMCA across the street. Ask your hotel if they have any fitness clubs in the area.
The Body Weight Exercises are Just as Effective
No gym, no problem! You can stay strong with body weight exercises such as plank variations and push-ups. You can do these exercises anywhere, without needing much space. Pilates and barre are both super-effective exercise styles that use body weight. Yoga too!
Start Your Day with Yoga
Yoga is a great way to stay active and relieve stress. Yoga is a mind/body practice which tones the body and increases strength while you focus on your breathing. Yoga is a simple, anywhere-to-do exercise that is essentially meditation through movement. It’s the perfect thing to do while you travel. You only need your body, a mat or towel.
Think again if you have never tried yoga, and believe it is too simple. There are many different styles and types of yoga asanas (poses). Some styles of yoga like yin focus on restorative benefits such as stretching and releasing tension and stress, while others like power are designed to build strength. Vinyasa flow is a combination of the two. Let me tell you that they are not easy. Yoga is beautiful because you don’t have to be perfect. Start by getting on your mat. Yoga classes are often offered for free at resorts. You can also find thousands of videos on YouTube, ranging from beginners to advanced, that you can watch. Local studios are also available to visit on your trip.
Try something new and get outside
It’s easy to come up with fun and interesting things to do while traveling.
